Are you receiving the "IBM My notifications - IBM Z" email? Have you seen how many New Function APARs are being delivered every week? The notification I received just last week listed OA54872, OA55767, OA54825, OA54559, and OA54826. Often the list is much longer.

The advent of OS/390 and it's original 6-month release cycle was intended to be the answer to the "dreaded" SPE -- a maintenance nightmare that inconvenienced enough customers to cause a minor revolt and a major change in how IBM packaged, tested, and delivered the operating system. Yet now, with mainframe-related manpower shortages mandating a no-less-than-two-year z/OS release cycle, SPEs are fast becoming the new normal.

It's a brave new world...

I just received this week's "IBM My Notifications - IBM Z" email and it contains two more new function APARs: OA55472 and PI91973. The previous week had five (listed above) and the prior week had four: PI99282, OA55109, OA54824, and OA55108. That's eleven SPEs in three weeks. A small sample, for sure, but extrapolating gives me nearly 200 SPEs for the year. And, IBM's "continuous delivery" strategy has yet to be fully rolled out, so expect that number to rise over time...
