Problems arise if you need more than one tape per day, or continuation reels. But then you can use D, E, F, ... And if you put the letter on the right (still legal volser, IIRC), you preserve collation. Or, you could catalog the tape data set so volser is irrelevant. I do that so I needn't keep the volser on a sticky note; I just look up with ISPF 3.4. (Sometimes the MVS catalog gets out-of-sync with the TMC. Don't know why.
