There's certainly no requirement to use Set Sector on any disk drive, but I question whether the 2860 could handle the data rate of a 2305.

But there's no *requirement* to use Set/Read Sector in your channel programing for a device that supports RPS; it's just a performance issue. A 3330 (and a fortiori, a 2305) should be able to be plugged into a 2860 selector channel and still work.
