Given that there are pen drives with viruses and other malware, I am
hesitant to say that is a good idea. This also could be a great way
to steal information.

Pendrive from IBM is not likely to have a virus. Note, the tape form IBM
or DVD from IBM can have virus as well. And it's also quite unlikely.
Stealing information? What information? During reading media? Hard to
perform. Not to metion there are pendrives with "readonly" physical switch.
BTW: Tapes can containt virus (as a proof I can store some of them on
the cart if you want), so maybe we should back to punched cards.
BTW2: Knives are dangerous, many people were killed with the knife.
