It is good and bad example.
Good - indeed, google or FB services are "fuzzy", while bank should
provide exact information with strict SLA parameters.
Bad - many big companies do use mainframe for its own needs. Example:
Boeing. Their products work without mainframe services. (some
simplification). Why none of new (in age terms) companies don't use
mainframe for internal use, like accounting?
BTW: I provided some popular names, but I would be happy to hear that
I'm wrong with that. I would be happy to hear there are new (less than
20-30 years old) mainframe customers, like company A, B, C, D, E... Even
not widely known.
BTW: My company fits the above criteria. We started using mainframe less
than 20 years ago. We are one of very few polish banks using mainframe.
I know other company who went into mainframe after us. But they already
came out.
Only one of our telecoms did use mainframe. But even this one has
migrated off.

Banks, financial organizations, retailers and other companies who depend on
reliable information tend to use mainframes. In the case of Google, Facebook
etc, if they give an erroneous result, it is not a major catastrophe.
Just my two pennyworth here.

96 of the biggest 100 banks in the world still run IBM mainframes.
Keywords: still, largest.
"Stil" means defensive, marketshare loss.
"Largest" means only the largest institutions really need mainframe.
Questions: What about those remaining 4 biggest banks? What computers do
they use?
Since those 4 bank in first 100 can live without mainframe, what about banks
from third or fourth hundred?
Mainframe are usually used by big and OLD companies. "Old" is important here
- it's IT legacy, it's cost of migration, etc.
What big and new (30 years old or less) companies use mainframe? Google?
Facebook? Netflix?
If there is job security in the world, that is it.
Not for me. Raincode.
