Perhaps and it depends on what is animated at all and for what use is that 
animation. 

But you must define 'animation'. Do you mean changing a picture in a 
presentation? Say a growing arrow or a pie chart? Or do you mean 3D animation 
of a character, landscape or a machine?

On what platform? Web based animation? In PDF? Or a series of GIF pictures? Or 
a .MOV file?

I certainly know that a Cray Computer was used to create still pictures 
(Computer-generated imagery (CGI)) for parts of full length movies (Star Wars 
for example). These pictures were then combined into different frames.
