This is why the company I work with (Prozgroup) is doing real well. We
put small, suppository "going away" z systems on our floor on down-sized
equipment creating a "z in the cloud" environment.
Once the costs are minimized, it usually becomes cheaper to leave the
applications on the mainframe than it is to replace them with
'off-platform emulators'. (Cobol tools like Micro-Focus, or proprietary
z emulators.)
When it gets down to the basics, the conversion of GL or such
applications to another platform is not hard. But(!), converting the
other business specific applications, such as manufacturing tracking,
becomes a nightmare. So move what is easy to move, then downsize.
With todays better IP communications, and smaller CPU/DASD requirements,
it is becoming more cost-effective to put them on an "outsourer's"
floor. Especially an outsource that understands the z environment.
Unlike many outsourcers who just to want to play in the sub-200 mip
arena, we thrive in the sub-200 mip customers. And, while other
outsourcers want to drive costs up, or at least keep them flat, we
strive to drop our customer's costs. In the end, it's better for them
and if we get the costs down enough, the machine may stay on our floor a
lot longer giving us a longer revenue stream.

Why am I giggling? I had one of our programmer's ask me about z390, both
COBOL and CICS. We _are_ getting off of z/OS. But a "sticking point" (PITA)
is the COBOL and CICS code (somehow). We had planned on using Microfocus
for our needs. I have heard that management is now in "sticker shock" mode
and looking for "something else" which could be used but does not cost as
much. By "not cost as much", I really mean "costs less than a Starbucks
latte". OK, I'm getting tacky again.
