IIRC Data Windowing Services could stitch them together - into an object larger than 2GB. I suspect we have the architects of DWS present in this very newsgroup.
As to the question of why not just go 64-Bit? ... Philosophically Hiperspaces and Dataspaces are akin to segments - with access control to them. This separation MIGHT - for some applications - be valuable.
