I'll chime in that we used Innovation's FatsCopy [3] for our 3590/3494 - 3592/3584 (native tape) migration. We went from 3200 x 3590 Media3/256 to 280 x 3592 Media13 tapes. [1] (Didn't track the TB amounts) Took Sept to Mar (8 months) for 400k files tho' only Mon-Fri biz hours (10/day) with 2 copy processes : est. 3,200 hrs elapsed. 98% of files were FdrAbr backups & archives (ML2), DB2 Image Copies, & SMF data for 2+ decades. "Client/User" files fit onto 1-2 Media13 tapes once copied.
We don't VTS here but I've seen in the documentation that FatsCopy will copy/move the back-end tapes ie. physical, directly without de-staging. [2] Sounds like you might not have considered that route. Could save you a lot of (elapsed) time & processing power. [1] Copy1 & 2 combined ie. both on- & off-site. [2] I'll bet others do as well but thought I'd get you thinking in that direction. [3] Still use the utility daily since we no longer have a large tape inventory to sling around. Particularly, we use it to stack tapes that would normally be left to individual 3590s and allowed to expire. DB2 Image Copies can stack on a single run but not start part-way up an already in-use tape. (without difficult VolSer/Label tracking) The same with Adabas backups. --------> signature = 6 lines follows <-------- Neil Duffee, Joe Sysprog, uOttawa, Ottawa, Ont, Canada telephone:1 613 562 5800 x4585 fax:1 613 562 5161 mailto:NDuffee of uOttawa.ca http:/ /aix1.uOttawa.ca/ ~nduffee "How *do* you plan for something like that?" We have about 17 TB of data sitting on physical 3590 tapes in the 3494 as stacked logical volumes from the B20. Does anybody know of any way of getting a list of the logical tapes on a stacked volume straight from z/OS? I know I can go to the physical library and request a tape map, but was hoping there is a way to get this directly. I dug through the books I know of and found nothing. We're looking at the migration effort to get off the 3494 and would like to be able to mount a physical 3590 tape once and copy the entire physical tape contents back to the VTS for copying to the replacement device (whatever that ends up being) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
