Hello all,

I was comparing output from the COBOL 5.1 compiler to the output from the COBOL
4.2 compiler, and noticed that for the program I chose to compile the 4.2
output contained message IGYOP3091-W "Code from xxx to xxx can never be
executed and was therefore discarded" but the 5.1 output did not.

I found a posting on the COBOL Café website asking about the absence of all
IGYOP messages from COBOL 5.1 compiles - this person seems to have done many
more experiments than I, which saves me that trouble. There was a response
from a Reid Copeland asking for a snippet of code so "we can investigate" which
was provided by the OP, but that's where the exchange seems to end. This was
back in June.

I ran the ERRMSG program and the message I was expecting was on page 47.

PP 5655-W32 IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS 5.1.1 ERRMSG Date
09/30/2014 Page 47
IGYXX3091-W Code from "?" to "?" can never be executed and was therefore
discarded.

So, I think it's PMR time, but I wanted to run it by anyone who has been
experimenting with COBOL 5.1 - have you seen any of the optimizer messages?
Has anyone already opened a PMR for this issue? (I searched but didn't find
one)

Thanks,
Greg Shirey
