Hello List,
Our "newby" team had an interesting discussion today regarding catalog "best
practices". I thought it would be enlightening to ask the list for input.
If you could rebuild your z/OS environment from scratch, however you wanted,
how would you organize user catalogs to optimize performance, availability and
recovery?
What volume(s) would you place them on?
How would you deal with the need for multiple TSO UCATs?
Thanks,
Alan
Alan,
For me, the biggest issue is catalog performance. If you have a CF,
look at ECS if you share catalogs. If not, make sure you add each
usercat to the VLF catalog cache. I'm still amazed at the number of
sites I go to where they still don't use VLF caching. Just add the
catalogs to the IGGCAS class in COFVLF00. Issue F CATALOG,OPEN to see
which catalogs are ICF (mastercats) and VLF (usercats). For z/OS V2R1,
IBM finally allows VLF to be modified with a command. At z/OS V1R13 and
lower, you have to recycle VLF to cache any new usercats.

Tom Conley
