What in this context is 'aboriginal' behavior? (I have never really
understood what aboriginal LINUX is.) Or is the intent vaguely
metaphorical, to suggest something old, indigenous, long antedating
the current?

About the linkage editor, it is true that it has not been withdrawn;
it was functionally stabilized long ago; it is already and becoming
progressively more irrelevant; its continued use is unwise. The
binder can produce such few load modules as may be required very early
in the IPL process, i.e., before support for PDSEs and program objects
becomes available.
