I post very little here because I have little or no trouble with the 5 old IBM 
systems I administer though I do enjoy reading other people's posts. I can't 
say the same thing about the z10 system that I help with on occasion. I have 
posted on this system before - it is in Oklahoma City (OKC) and I'm in 
California. A power outage crashed the system a few weeks ago. The IT staff was 
unable to bring the system up after power was restored. Because the DS6800 was 
acting strange (wouldn't power off and storage manager wouldn't talk to it) IBM 
service was called and the hardware was deemed okay so we were told that the 
data on the disks was likely corrupted. 

Like the last time I posted about a problem with this system, they were getting 
an ACTZ0182 which said "Activation Complete Load Not Processed" when trying to 
do an activate (IPL). So I suggested they try and IPL the system from tape just 
to see if the system would come up. After the system was rebuilt since the last 
data corruption ordeal a utility tape was created along with a DDR backup of 
all of the system volumes. The activation profile was changed to aim at the 
address of the tape drive instead of the 610RES pack and an activate was tried 
with no luck. Note: this is how it's done on older systems like the P/390's I 
have so I was hoping it would be the same on the z10. Maybe I'm wrong.

Since the crew out in OKC are not IBM administrators, I called service on their 
behalf to save time. I specified that I would like someone to examine the z10 
and tell us what we need to do to get it running again. The system is still 
under warranty and under service. I gave IBM the phone number of who to contact 
in OKC for a visit request and the contact mentioned something about not being 
able to IPL the system from tape. The person he was speaking to at IBM said 
that no one there knows how to do that and that an IBM Business Partner should 
be contacted. Huh?

I'm pretty sure that is a mistake but have things gotten that specialized that 
some of the "simpler" things have gotten lost in the static? Why would a 
customer call on a business partner, who I imagine would be a separate charge, 
if they have a warranty and service contract with IBM? Is the DS6800 so 
sensitive that a power outage would corrupt the data every single time or could 
something else be going on here?

Anyway, am I correct in my assumption that IPLing this system from tape is as I 
stated above? I don't have any of the manuals/DVDs that came with the system as 
they are in OKC with the system.
