John:

That's how I got into Systems Programming -> Network Engineering -> Development.

No regrets …

Who needs|will need IT pros? Anxiety about this is misplaced.

Circa 1910 an automobile trip from Boston to Philadelphia, London to
Birmingham, or Paris to Lyon was a high adventure that usually ended
badly. There was no infrastructure in place for such undertakings,
and the skills required to succeed in them would today, suitably
updated, qualify one for membership in the Society of Automotive
Engineers (SAE).

All that has changed. Almost anyone who can drive can make such
trips; they are routine.

The SAE nevertheless thrives, and so it will be with IT professionals
who have the requisite skills. There will, however, be only a few
places for mediocrities among them, and the mediocrities who occupy
those places will not be exuberantly paid.

What I regret most about this is that IT careers will be much less
accessible to the able but uncredentialed. The operator-to-sysprog
career path has already, for example, all but disappeared.
