I sure hope you are in the process of re-thinking not having alternate
volumes as you move to physical 3592's. Loss of a 3490 volume might
affect hundreds of data sets. Loss of a single 3592 DFHSM cartridge
could mean loss of thousands of data sets. Aging of media, aging of
drives, and the occasional simple accident in physical handling of
cartridges means that it is inevitable that at some point you will end
up with an unreadable cartridge. The more dense the cartridge, the
greater the risk even a single cartridge loss could be catastrophic to
one or more applications, and the easier to justify the expense of
alternates to cover a hopefully rare event.
