The 2014 VM Workshop will be conducted at North Carolina A&T State University,
in beautiful Greensboro, NC for 2.5 days from about 9AM Thursday June 26, until
~about~ 2PM Saturday, June 28. For more workshop details, see:
http://www.vmworkshop.org/2014

WHO:

z/VM, and Linux on System z Friends

WHAT:

Location, travel, lodging from (inexpensive!) dorm rooms up to nearby hotels,
registration, travel hints, and sponsor information for the 2014 VM Workshop
have been posted to: http://www.vmworkshop.org/2014

At the 2013 VM Workshop a "Security" Open Panel Discussion was very popular.
This year we are planning even more Open Panel Discussions, including:

* "Stump the Old-Timers".. bring your own questions!

* "Configuration of IBM's z/VM, products, and ISV products".

* "Utilities That Make z/VM Administration Easier." We'll seed the
discussion, but bring your favorite utility ideas, too!
Examine some free utilities at any of the:

o free VM Workshop tools page: http://www.vmworkshop.org/tools

o free Fran Hensler's VM and VSE Tools page hosted by Slippery Rock
University: http://zvm.sru.edu/~DOWNLOAD/

o free IBM VM Download Packages page:
http://www.vm.ibm.com/download/packages/

o free Sine Nomine Associates tools page:
http://www.sinenomine.net/vm/products

* "Easy System Task Automation" - e.g. VMUTIL, VMSERVER, etc. - lead by
a group of z/VM old-timers.

* "What z/VM Newcomers Should Know, But Don't" Lead by old-timers who
have (mostly) healed from their self-inflicted wounds.

* More Panel Discussion ideas suggested at the Opening Session (or on
this listserve), and selected by attendees.

Some of the hands-on labs and sessions being planned, or already submitted for
consideration (and we're only just getting started!), include:

*          A live, hands-on z/VM Installation -or- migration from non-SSI to
SSI (your choice) lab. Seats limited to about 16, or when sharing a laptop, 32.

* A live, hands-on Linux on System z Installation lab (SLES or RHEL,
your choice). Seats limited to about 16, or when sharing a laptop, 32.
* A live, hands-on REXX scripting lab (exact host environment still
under discussion).
* A live, hands-on Shared File System (SFS) and Byte File System (BFS)
intro lab.
* An SFS overview and administration session.

* Disk and Tape storage devices for Linux guests.

*          SCON/SURF/RACE (Server CONsolidation/Server Utilization Reduction
Facility/Rehosting Applications from Competitive Environments) studies, and why
customers should employ them.
* New CA virtual tape in the cloud storage product (VTAPE/Riverbed).

Some other "Desired Sessions" we'd like to see presented include:

*          VMSES/E Introduction (SERVICE, PUT2PROD, and BEYOND...)

*          CMS Administration Boot Camp

*          z/VM: Where Do I  Start?   (Configuring: IBM's z/VM, IBM and ISV
products, and common free utility tools recommendations)

* Virtualization Comparisons v. z/VM; Pros and Cons (e.g. LPAR,
VMWare, KVM, Xen, Wind River, etc.)

* Your own hands-on lab ideas (propose one or more!)

WHEN:

SESSION DATES: 2.5 days, beginning Thursday morning JUNE 26 until ~about~ 2PM
or so Saturday JUNE 28.

Choose from multiple concurrent presentations packed full of up-to-the-minute
technical details for all levels of z/VM, and Linux on System z, including
hands-on z/VM 6.3.0 SSI Installation -or- non-SSI to SSI migration (your
choice); and 'Linux on System z' installation lab (SLES or RHEL, your choice).
Addition hands-on labs are anticipated and in discussion at this time.
(Wednesday June 25 is reserved for VM Workshop Volunteer Committee planning
meetings/set-up; if you are interested in planning, please *do* join the
committee; just send off-list email to me asking to join, my email address is
at the end.)

WHY:

Previous VM Workshops have been referred to by the small-minded as: 'a large
number of system programmers with some limited adult supervision' (do you
_really_ want to miss this!??). Expect another wonderful "up close and
personal" workshop with great content and terrific camaraderie. Come to meet
VM old-timers... and *future* VM old-timers while learning the latest technical
z/VM and Linux for System z details. Don't know where to start with Linux on
System z? This is a great place to start!

PRICE:

STILL UNCHANGED from the previous three years, ** ONLY $100 per attendee**.
Dorm rooms will be available for lodging at very reasonable prices. This is
the best bargain out there for z/VM and Linux on System z education, and quite
reasonable for anyone paying their own way.

The $100 registration fee includes:

  * An NCAT-logoed polo shirt with an embroidered "2014 VM Workshop" patch on
the arm (not just a cheap T-shirt like those high-priced conferences),

* A Thursday evening Gala Reception and Banquet Dinner,

* Pretty much all meals - attendees will be provided with an NC A&T
meal debit card pre-loaded with $65 to purchase other meals and snacks (i.e.
food only, not books, etc.) at NC A&T facilities.

New for 2014: Full-time students (with valid NC A&T or other accredited college
student photo ID), only $10, which includes:

* Access to all sessions and vendor areas,

* Reduced cost for the Thursday evening Gala Reception and Banquet
Dinner (pay only actual meal cost),

  * Special session track on VM architecture with industry experts.

HOW:

Register once the registration and dorm web pages open on March 1. Until then,
request a free VM Workshop account so it is ready when you are, at:
http://www.vmworkshop.org/2014

(This "Save the Date" post is provided especially for those with long
travel/education budget approval process lead times).

PARTICIPATE:

Compete in the infamous "Ugly Hawaiian Shirt" contest for a chance to win a
treasured, but ugly prize! (B.Y.O.U.H.S.)

The VM Workshop began as a way for VM systems programmers to share what they do
at their sites, what tools they had written, and what they had learned... let's
stay on that track of mostly USER-PRESENTED sessions. Don't have enough to
fill an hour? No problem... submit the idea (or multiple ones!) and the
committee will merge multiple shorter presentations in to full hour sessions.
Don't be shy, we're all your z/VM and Linux on System z **friends** - no
'flaming' is tolerated.

Place this event on your calendars and please join us at the IUPUI. Don't miss
this fun (and educational) event!

This e-mail was sent on behalf of the 2014 VM Workshop planning committee.
