I'm not so sure about the "radical", as time-sharing was available earlier on. I agree with "slow" - I was working at a service bureau at the time, and after evaluating our options, settled on offering a modified version of RAND Wylbur. The early versions lacked an execution facility, requiring users to do most thing by batch, but it helped get more work out of the machine.
