Rather, I understand that the support was entirely in the access method so
that legacy applications using OPEN, GET, PUT, READ, WRITE, and CLOSE
continue to work unmodified.  Perhaps one of the assembler experts such
as Ed or Mark might supply a concurring or dissenting opinion.

Some applications that showed data set names in their SYSPRINT were slightly
modified to show the pathname instead of a 44-character dummy supplied by
the OS somehow.

For an application to restrict itself to a subset of device types is a 
misdesign.
Rather the application should specify its access method requirements and let
the access method deal with device types.
