I have this vague memory of accessing the VTOC with a quoted DSN of X'040404...' on a DD card (and I do mean card, X'04' = 12-4-9 punch).

In any event, I thought that FORMAT4.DSCB was specific to xMASPZAP - something that it checked for and replaced with x'040404..." if found. (guessing, by using RDJFCB and TYPE J OPEN).
