It's all working. This will be my last post unless something dramatic comes up.

You know that and I know that but the darned users -- they do what they do. And 
if what they do is issue the command from a BROWSE session I get the error. My 
whole reason for this thread was trying to issue a nice message rather than 
blowing up ugly, and thanks to the help here, I am achieving that.

I use View in one situation. I use BROWSE in this situation. It's a private, 
temporary data set so ENQ is irrelevant. And changing the data set would make 
no sense in any event.
