I dislike being the ignorant buffoon answering my own post but here goes. Problem solved by butting my head against the wall and reviewing every implementation step.
Problem traced to NOT having a MOUNT statement for the Utility File System. Once mounted at /dsfs all is well. @_@_@_@ I still have the question of how to debug DSFS in the future without a way to have it tell me 'what went wrong'.
