I'm NOT trying to start a war here, just trying to grok whether I'm confused or not. I
will make assertions below, any/all of which may be wrong, but that seems better than
qualifying each with "I think..." etc.
Upgrading z/VM versions has been pretty trivial for quite a while: point to a
new CP module, reIPL.
Upgrading z/OS is a lot harder. There's no way to just swap the OS itself,
which means you need to clone the LPAR and then connect the user data volumes,
with required catalog tinkering. And SPOOL needs to be backed up and restored
(or contents lost).
Is this really still true in 2024?
IMHO it was *never* true.
1. You have to put system libraries onto DASD. Not as easy as VM, but
repeatable.
2. You can use all your operational datasets. Some actions can be
required, like IRRMIN00,PARM=UPDATE. New system libraries should be
cataloged, but usually it is already done on p. 1.
3. No spool content lost.
However usually we don't upgrade or reinstall our system every quarter.
Things are changing. 3490 tapes are no longer available (as any other
tapes). No more ServerPac Dialog. And your order contain different set
of products, because you added something and removed something else. And
you already have mod-54 volumes, so you can place system datasets more
efficiently. And you finally want to start using LARGE PS for your
SPOOL. No more bunch of mod-3 volumes. And you wan to fix/improve
something you screwed up during previous installation. And after 20+
years you are forced to migrate SDSF authorities to RACF. And...
Actually most of the above would regard to exactly the same z/OS version
reinstallation just few years later.
