From what little information that is available, unlike the CP, IFP, ICF, IFL,
zIIP and SAP processors the DPU is most probably an 'on-chip' function like AI,
DFP, Compression, Crypto etc.
I can confirm it. It is more or less like IFP. However IFP is just one
of processors, but DPU is *not*. This is different piece of hardware.
Like sort "coprocessor".
BTW: We can say DPU is still not born.
Yes, the Telum II was GA'd, but no customer could order a machine with
that processor.
The list of processors:
CP vel GP
ICF
IFL
zAAP
zIIP
SAP
IFP
CBP - Container Based Processor. Planned approx. 2015 (z/OS 2.3), but
never released. However some traces (with the name) can be found in the
documentation.
Unassigned IFL - regular IFL, but not active. However it is not just
physical CP residing in machine. The difference is the customer may
activate it whenever he wants, because it is bought. Reason - licensing.
Less IFL cores means lower fee.
Unassigned ICF - I don't know the rationale. HWMA (S&S) savings?
Unassigned CP - shortly existed in z990.
spare - obvious
faulty - you don't want to see it!
