Esteemed Sysprogs,

We use CBU to activate additional engines and capacity twice a year.

The image profiles on the HMC match the LPAR names and there seems to be no way to associate alternate image profiles to be used while CBU is active. Therefore, we have been manually updating the image profiles to add the additional engines during the CBU and then manually changing them back when the CBU is over.

Is there a better way? Can alternate image profiles be used? If not, can these changes be easily scripted?

Scripted methods were described by Tom Mathias.
My €0.02 for "quite easy" methods:
1. My favorite: just create "small" profiles with RESERVED processors and simply CF them online. No automation needed. The command will add the CPUs or just fail with no further effects.
2. Backup & Restore the profiles - described by Tom.
3. Save As aka rename. You can have many profiles per LPAR, but only one is active. Example: your LPARs are named ED, RADEK, JOHN. Just create ED01, RADEK01, JOHN01 *and* ED02, RADEK02, JOHN02, etc. Simple naming convention. Then Save As quickly create you favorite set of profiles. Good for small number of LPARs, of course. 4. Alternate IOCDS. Two IOCDS, the only difference is LPAR names. Then you may have two sets of LPAR profiles. Disadvantage: you have to keep two IOCDSes on every IODF change. IMHO good for one time exeperiment.
