I usually keep my bigoted mouth shut in threads like this, but guys, why DFSORT? That's great for the simple stuff, but REXX is so much easier and you don't have to sweat over more and more and yet more inventive solutions.
If we're looking at alternatives, there's also Java. I can never understand what the DFSORT solutions are doing from reading the control cards, and I'm sure I am not alone there. A programming language makes it much easier for the person who has to understand it in the future.
Java performance should be much better than Rexx if you have significant numbers of records. I wouldn't consider 5 million records a large number, unless they are particularly large records.
