I found some references to IBM 4224 attachment via the Asynchronous
Emulation Adapter for the IBM 3174 Establishment Controller, but I think
you're past that point. Both (or multiple) attachment options were
available for the IBM 4224.

I found a possible clue or two. According to IBM Publication No.
GA23-0218-08 the IBM 4224 is a "Control Unit Terminal" (CUT) device,
meaning it needs the IBM 3174 "to interpret the data stream and execute
functions on [its] behalf." So are IBM 3178 and 3179 terminals, as
examples. As opposed to Distributed Function Terminals (DFTs). So
presumably you'd set it up in *fairly* similar fashion to another
coax-attached CUT device such as an IBM 3179.

This IBM documentation might also provide some clues:

https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/hints-setting-4224-print-gddm-output
https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/dfhzc2459e-and-dfhzc2479e-when-printing-ipds-4224-printer-cics

It looks like the IBM 4224 can be configured as a LU1 or LU0 device,
typically LU1. Also I'm seeing references that the IBM 4224 can operate in
either IPDS or non-IPDS mode. The IBM 3174 needs IPDS capable microcode
for the former, so if you don't have that then you'll be working on the
latter (non-IPDS).

The SAS Institute published some sample VTAM configuration in this manual,
particularly starting on p. 206:

https://support.sas.com/documentation/installcenter/enclosures/instructions/mvs609em5.pdf

They specifically reference the IBM 4224, so the syntax will probably be
very similar but not quite identical.

Anyway, I hope those few breadcrumbs get you going. Good luck!
