Does the ABCs of System Programming have tutorials on SMS? That might be a good
place to start.

Historically, IBM has had a mix of good and bad classes. I still remember my
7070 class, where the instructor couldn't answer questions that the students
could. There have been 3rd party instructors, but far too many have dropped out
because companies were not willing to pay for training.

Subject: Re: Courses for Storage Admin Newbies

Fred,

There is an IBM course, SS84. It is, like most other storage-related IBM
courses I've seen recently, very out of date but you might find a training
provider who can still give it. Being out of date isn't a show stopper for
basic education, imho. The course is actually for DFSMS implementation and
mirrors the contents of z/OS DFSMS Implementing System-Managed Storage,
SC23-6849 which might be a good place to start for reading up on the
subject. You might also want to look into training for your hardware, too.

I'm in the UK so I couldn't comment on training providers in the US which
is where I assume you are. I know that at least one UK training company has
a specific DFSMS course and I assume other trainers will too.

I would expect IBM Tech U and SHARE to have sessions based on a specific
function or covering what's new so probably not a great place for you to
look.

By way of an unscheduled rant, IBM courses and materials used to be
excellent. The courses I've looked at over the past few years have declined
significantly in quality. Some have been updated but very lazily: modules
have been tacked on to the end with a bunch of release-based updates which
are quick to do but create a course that's hard to follow and contains
contradictions. It's a shame.
