I don't think there is any reliable source for calling a modem connection sequence "sounds like a duck choking on a kazoo" either. Yet I know many people that have used that expression. Maybe describe it as a colloquialism.
There are many things in history that people are not proud of. But the dislike thereof doesn't mean that they didn't happen.
