mean this, which REXX handles just fine:

'blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah'
And your second wish is surely not significantly different from:
list='ssn ssx stm wcn wcx wln wlx wld'
do while list<>''
parse var list val list
/* etc */
...which I do frequently.
