Renaming a data set that is in the LNKLST is inappropriate in all cases. LNKLST UNALLOCATE...LNKLST ALLOCATE is intended for a case where you need to deal with an uncataloged data set with the same name as a data set in the LNKLST. If you instead use that approach to mess with LNKLST data sets, you are in unsupported territory and anything that goes wrong is your fault. It is expected that LNKLST data sets are cataloged.
