I'm not IBMer, however I remember z990 introduction. Among many changes and enhancements the most important was XMP or multiple channel set. That introduced PCHID, CSS, etc. It is not matter of IODF only, it is matter of system working with the resources. And there was another revolution, but only for ICSF-related things: crypto hardware. z990 was first machine without CCF. It was first machine with CPACF for clear key functions and PCIXCC cards for secure key functions. Note: the oldest supported MVS-like system on z990 was last OS/390 - that means OS/390 V2R10. Compatibility feature (FMID) was required to make it possible.
