Well - thanks to IBM and Compuware/Innovation the issue has been fixed.

Getting a dump of the process was a tad tricky due to too many processes
hitting the slip conditions but when we finally captured it the IBM dude found
that our new version of IAM was intercepting the svc26 call(s) from the catalog
search interface call and changing the work area length field. The catalog
search had actually returned all of the information in the work area but since
the indicated length was now shortened, the calling procedure stopped short and
never saw the result. This was a known issue to the IAM folks and a set of
zaps plus a convenient IPL ( to put on toleration ptfs for new ts7770 hardware
) cured this problem.
This is the only LPAR that has IAM on it - for an application that was supposed
to be decommissioned 10 years ago but somehow..........

{ me: I thought we had uninstalled IAM because no one used it any more ! }
{ sysprog: We did but we had to put it in again}
{me: ????}
{sysprog: the two people who still know what the XXXX app does noticed that it
wasn't working}
{me: I thought the XXXX app was retired when the new system came online - and I
thought those folks had retired!}
{sysprog: apparently there is no equivalent function in the new system and
those folks are back on contract part-time}
{me: when did you put in the new IAM ?}
{sysprog: on March 9 <the_date_that_sftp_quit_working> }

Thanks to everyone who helped and offered suggestions.

The posted data shows only one alias. Did you truncate the listing?

As long as both alaii point to the same ucat, I am mystified.

So -
READY
listcat alias all cat(catalog.vmvsmca)
                              LISTING FROM CATALOG -- CATALOG.VMVSMCA ALIAS
--------- AC
      HISTORY
        RELEASE----------------2     CREATION--------2017.186
      ENCRYPTIONDATA
        DATA SET ENCRYPTION-----(NO)
      ASSOCIATIONS
        USERCAT--CATALOG.VDSK204

I selected a couple of dozen aliases and verified that the datasets created -
such as AC.PROD.PH.P37806.D2020191 (created yesterday) - are cataloged to the
expected usercat. The ones I checked all seem to be correct.

There are also a few aliases and 2 usercats that need to go away since those
applications have been moved away and the z/OS version decommissioned.
Different issue but it is interesting what one can learn by poking around in
places where one doesn't normally venture.

You used an syntactically correct, but functionally incorrect version of the
listcat command.
The version you need is LIST ALIAS ALL CAT(mcatname).

Verify the association in this catalog with the association on the system you
can "see" the dataset.

HTH,

BTW. If there is any discrepancy, it may take a fair amount of work to resolve
