As far as I know SM is only used to configure storage, i.e., define drives, on 
the DS6800. You can shut down SM and the PC it runs on and still use the 
drives. I too would have expected SM on a different PC to discover the 
configuration as long as the correct IP addresses were provided. AFAIK there is 
no license for SM and no handshake occurs between SM and any of the attached 
systems.  If the DS6800 was shut down incorrectly you can  experience a 
situation where the OS can't see the drives and a CE will have to run some 
special ICKDSK commands to get them back.
