Before changing the CSA allocation, you should understand:

- How much of the CSA area is used when the system is running
- How its use varies over time.

It is possible to specify too little CSA to allow the system and its subsystems and applications to run. It is also possible to specify too little to let it run for very long even if everything starts, because CSA often fragments over time.

In the z/OS Initialization and Tuning Guide there is a topic, 1.4.3.1, "SQA/CSA Thresholds," you should review before reducing CSA.

Another alternative is to reduce the number of libraries in the LPA list (or in dynamic LPA). This will have an effect on system performance, however, and there is another series of topics in section 1.4 of the Initialization and Tuning Guide about the tradeoffs.
