XMing is also freely available on Windows and seems to work well enough as long as you check the "no access control" check box. I've used it while running Java applications with GUIs on z/OS. Notably for installing SAS but also for running open source Java applications as well. I was surprised at how easy it was to get those things working and how well they ran (with sufficient zAAP capacity).
