I wonder how RMM would know the contents of a tape received from another facility, as stated by the OP.

At the beginning I would suggest to use IEBGENER and read only the labels. It can be read directly with "Using tapes" in a hand, but colleague of mine made some rexx to reformat it to more user-friendly form.
