The site manager who was in charge of the building when the UPS was
installed had retired. The site had a problem develop with the
spinning motor that converted battery power to A/C for the data
center. A bearing was out and the motor could not turn. They
replaced the bearing a couple of times but kept failing. So they
ordered other replacement parts and were on Utility power only until
it could be fixed. Weekly UPS testing was disabled. Sunday 1730,
power went out. All power in the neighborhood was on, no breakers
were thrown. 1800 power came back on and restarted the systems. 2
mainframes, 2 ESS F20s, etc. Lost a lot of time and restarting
programs. Monday 1730, power went out. Same thing with no other
outages, no breakers. 1800 power came back on and restarted the
systems.

They kept looking for things that could turn the power off, but did
not find anything. Still waiting for parts. The next Sunday at 1730,
power went out again. 1800 back on. They finally tracked down a
computer that tested the UPS by turning off utility power. They added
a check to see if there was UPS power before turning it off. Monday
at 1730, power went out again, 1800 back on. They found a second
computer programmed the same way and changed it.

Parts arrived, and while installing the parts, noted the shaft was
worn and they had to fix the shaft to stop tearing up the bearings.
We started moving equipment out of that site into the primary site.
We started searching for another site further away from the primary.
We got one about 150 miles away instead of 2 miles. We close down
this site next summer (being converted for use for x86/x64/p servers).
