I just moved to Ubuntu 10.10 and the kernel support for the switchable graphics improves things substantially. I'm now able to switch between graphics adapters, although I haven't been able to take advantage of my ATI card's abilities yet (need to spend some time on that) and I can turn off the ATI card now. My battery is very happy about that :).
Support isn't quite transparent yet but it is a lot better...
