When we see some social, political or cultural relevance to an event or incident, and start sharing the facts, views and opinions about that event, it starts evolving to be media. When this process culminates in a concrete form like a newsletter, a blog or a radio program and reach out to a particular community of people, it is called Community Media, or as we fondly call it Barefoot Media. Keeping the evolving nature of Media in mind, this workshop aims to address the following questions: ▪ What is media? ▪ How does it work? ▪ What is the politics of mainstream media today? Do newspapers and news channels actually cover ‘real’ news? ▪ Whose voice is represented in mainstream media? Why is this happening? ▪ What are the new kinds of media? ▪ As citizens, can we create our own media? If yes, what is the process for such media creation? ▪ How can we disseminate the media produced by us to an audience? ▪ What is the relationship between media and democracy? The theoretical and practical aspects of various forms of media will be discussed and the participants could focus (individually or in group) on what they are interested to work on/learn more about. The participants will have an opportunity to engage with the local community at Kandbari and Palampur during the course of the workshop to produce media content. The participants will also produce a newsletter (or some form of media product) by the end of the workshop.
