The issue of Nationalism has cropped up in a strong way since JNU was
attacked. The masked men who shouted anti-India slogans are being used as a
pretext to label JNU being den of anti Nationals. As such JNU has been one
of the outstanding institutions, placed very high in excellence in ranking
done by Ministry. Its contribution to academia, to research has been
excellent. In response to the attack by Central Government the JNU faculty
and students decided to hold ‘Teach-ins’ on Nationalism. Daily prominent
teachers and other academics elaborated on the concept of nationalism.
What emerges is that nation is not an eternal phenomenon. Nations started
coming up from last three centuries In India the feudal regimes-Kingdoms
were succeeded by the colonial rule. During this period the changes towards
modernity laid the foundation of Indian Nationalism. This process was
directed against the British colonial rule and the process of formation of
Indian nation was participated by all the sections of society barring
feudal-sections and some upper caste elements. India belongs to people of
all religions, castes and to both the genders. During the freedom movement,
which laid the foundation of India, people came together and adopted the
values of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity as their uniting bond. That’s
what India is all about.
In this issue we are carrying information about two very crucial books by
Shamsul Islam, ‘Know the RSS’ and ‘Muslims against Partition’. Both are
impeccable in their research and a must read for all those who value
democracy. The links of film on Asghar Ali Engineer and a YouTube video of
Kanhaiya Kumar’s small speech in Delhi are also given.
