The hounding of Social activist Teesta Setalvad has been going on in
unrelenting fashion from last few months. The granting of bail to her and
Javed Anand came as a sigh of big relief. Though still many more struggles
are expected. The state of Gujarat and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are in
vendetta mode. Both these human rights defenders have been at the forefront
of struggles to get justice for the victims of Gujarat and have also taken
the lead in defense of secular democratic values. This harassment of hers’
has also initiated the process whereby most of the human rights defenders
have come up protesting against their persecution by the state. The
solidarity for them has come from all the quarters who stand for justice
and peace, and that is a heartening thing. Incidentally this is the first
time that due to their invaluable efforts the culprits of mass violence of
Gujarat have been brought to the book and punished.
At the same time the murder of Dr. M.M. Lalburgi, the farmer Vice
Chancellor of Karnataka University comes as yet another heinous act by the
right wing forces. This is in line with the earlier killings of Dr.
Narendra Dabholkar and Com Govind Pansare. Prof Kalburgi was a left
ideologue and a strong opponent of the blind faith and was targeted by the
communal organizations. His murder also is on the similar pattern as that
of the earlier two. It is a big setback to the progressive movement, the
movements for rational thought and secular democratic society. As the
culprits of Dabholkar and Pansare’s murderers have not been arrested so
far, that is a signal to the culprits with a political agenda to carry on
with their sinister agenda.
