*Secular Action Network*
*April 2014*
>From the Editor's Desk
The annual convention held in Varanasi (March 23-24) got a very good
response from different activists associated with the Forum. The overall
concern was the ascendance of communal forces, which need to be checked not
only at electoral level but also at the social and cultural level. For this
the forum discussed the possibility of peace centers in various places. The
concept is to have regular activities for promotion of secular values all
around. These activities can be in the form of interaction with children,
youth and different sectors of society. Regular cultural activities, film
clubs, intercommunity programs also need to be promoted in coming times.
The threat of fascism, soft fascism, gripping the nation after the general
elections is looming round the corner. Though lately it seems that many
sections of society who were initially taken in by the propaganda of Modi
are now realizing its falsehoods. His aggressive, brusque and authoritarian
nature is not what a good leader should have, his understanding of facts of
history and concepts of our nation are totally flawed and this keeps coming
out through his various speeches. Many of those who saw him an alternative
to the present Government, which has been totally discredited, seem to
realize that he can't be the replacement; he and his ideology are
detrimental to the values of our Indian nationhood.
The attempt of Gujarat state to harass activist Teesta Setalvad, Javed
Anand and other activists is a despicable move on the part of the state
Government. Social activists and scholars in large numbers have protested
against this. We also carry a very revealing interview by Manoj Mitta on
the Gujarat carnage of 2002. His book on the topic is a landmark and is a
must for all of us.
