Dear all

Request for support to ex workers of UP Rakiya Khatiya Mill,
Maunath Banjan, Mau District, Central up (also investigage if what was told to
me is true)

As I was waiting in Lucknow station to catch a train to
Gorakhpur last week, around 300 mill workers were gathered on the platform
including around 50 women.

The story they narrated was follows. The state run mill
employing 5000 labourers, 550 female was closed on 30./10/2005 (producing
thread or yarn- my hindi is not terrific).
Hardly any compensation has been given. When women and men went on a
Dharna, with women in the front the women were hit. They had complained to the
Chief Minister and Labour officials several times, but no action taken.
According to them the mill equipment had been handed over to one Mr Pandy.  The
men have taken to rikshaw pulling,
construction, and some of the women are sitting at home  and other are doing
domestic work. The single
women amongst them around 50 out of 550 are most affected.  The gendered
implications have to be
investigated, as well as caste. They reported coming from all castes. Some were
from village and  while several  from towns (No mnregs).

As per governmet order they should, according to them, get
90 days of compensation per year worked.
They reported getting only 20-26 days compensation totally

Apparently, 24 such mills have been closed in the era of
liberalization, globalization et al. 23 are private and this is the only public
one.

PLEASE INVESTIGATE: CONTACT PERSON HARIDA KUMAR: 7376458031/8423908389.
Zilla parishad president, Mazdoor Samaj Party.
