Steven Harper is our Prime Minister and Tony Clement is Minister of Industry, to whom the Chief Statistician of Statistics Canada reports. Earlier this year, Statistics Canada was ordered to scrap our long form census and the Chief Statistician resigned. For those of you at the isqols meeting in Florence, if you went to the first panel discussion then you heard me say that Statistics Canada can only do what the government allows it to do and the Chief Statistician replied that the government never tells the bureau what it can do. During the summer news media discussions Clement said that the Chief was under the impression that he (Chief) did not answer to his Minister, but the Chief was wrong.
As Christmas approaches, our thoughts once again turn to – surprise – the Census. The Christmas story began with Mary and Joseph travelling from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the census (“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem in the town... of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to regi ster with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child………..” Luke 2:1-5). There is no record of either Joseph or Mary objecting to the Census as intrusive. To date, Maxime Bernier has not been able to find their email, and they are not among the three complainants identified by the Privacy Commissioner (the Wise Men, perhaps?) What better way, then, of celebrating the holiday season, than with a “census carol” or two to continue the protest against the Harper Conservative government decision to cancel the mandatory long-form census?
