FYI ----- Original Message ----- *From:* The Milli Gazette | Editor <[email protected]> *To:* [email protected] *Sent:* Tuesday, May 18, 2010 12:14 AM *Subject:* Letter to the Editor The Editor, Times of India New Delhi Sir, Mohammed Wajihuddin's report, “Being Muslim in India means Syeds spit on Julahas in an 'egalitarian community’” (TOI, 16 May 2010), is an unnecessary intervention in the current caste debate in India. Its headline is too insulting and provocative and there is nothing to support it in the report itself. There is no denying the fact that a quasi-caste system does exist among Muslims of the Subcontinent but it is not hard and rigid. We have always known this as "biradaris", *i.e,* brotherhoods or sub-communities, until pseudo-scholars and Mandal-affected small time politicians with active support of various political parties started forming separate associations and demanding concessions for their sub-groups. In real life, the distinction blurs once a member of the so-called "'Ajlaf" (which means rough) category gets educated and earns enough money to match others. My own family of Pathans has been marrying into Ansaris for the last three generations. My wife is an Ansari and the wife of my son too is an Ansari. Even some of the present-day stalwarts of the so-called "Ajlaf" or backward communities are married into the so-called "Ashraf" families. It is time your brand of media, the votebank-hungry political parties and the power-hungry small time politicians stopped this ugly game of dividing the Muslim community.
