BHWANIPATNA: Five women, including two lactating mothers with babies, of
Chatrapur village adjacent to Lanjigarh here, were remanded in judicial
custody on Thursday by the SDJM, Bhawanipatna. They were forwarded to court
by Lanjigarh police on the charge of committing dacoity under Section 395 of
IPC.

Alleging violation of human rights, the villagers brought the matter to the
notice of the members of National and State Human Rights Commissions who
were here organising a workshop to create awareness on human rights.

According to the FIR lodged by Furnace Fabrication India Ltd, on February 22
a group of people armed with axe, shovels and iron rods entered the premises
of the construction site and pelted stones at labourers and engineers
working there forcing them to abandon the workplace. The FIR said the mob,
including the women, stole steel materials like fabricated steel plates,
angles, channels, anchors, structural steel and scrap materials weighing
about 65 MT. Police report said the accused persons belonged to Chatrapur
village.

In this connection, police arrested five women from Chatrapur village on
Thursday and forwarded them to court.

They were remanded in judicial custody after the SDJM, Bhawanipatna,
rejected their bail pleas. Meanwhile, the accused women have filed an appeal
against the order.

The incident has caused a public outcry in Chatrapur and Lanjigarh area and
villagers have demanded a highlevel probe into the incident. Daitary
Pradhan, advocate for the accused women, said the women had been framed and
it is a clear case of violation of human rights. It is humanly impossible
for these women to steal such a huge quantity of steel materials as alleged
in the FIR, he said.

"After a war, the silencing of arms is not enough. Peace means respecting
all rights. You can’t respect one of them and violate the others. When a
society doesn’t respect the rights of its citizens, it undermines peace and
leads it back to war.”
