Sirs,
It has been brought to our attention that an adivasi woman Sodi Sambo of Gompa
village, who is understandably the lone surviving witness of a
massacre carnied out by the state forces together with a Salwa Judum brigade in
a Dantewada village on October 1 last, and herself a victim being shot in her
leg, has been detained earlier today while travelling in the company of noted
Gandhian from the region, Shri Himanshu Kumar, on her way to Delhi for medical
treatment.Reportedly she is still in police custody at the Kanker Police
Station at the instance of the Dantewada SP, Sh. Amaresh Mishra.
May we, in this context, draw your attention to the fact that as per the
current provisions of the Cr. PC no women shall be arrested after sunset and
before sunrise except in exceptional circumstances. And the police will also be
required to give information about the arrest of a person as well as place of
detention to anyone who may be nominated by the accused. A provision for
compensating a person who has been detained by the police without any valid
ground has also been made.
Given the circumstances of the case and the blood-stained track records of the
Chhattisgarh state administration, we do request you to immediately look into
the illegal detention of Sodi Sambo and ensure her immedaite release and her
safe transport to Delhi for further medical treatment of her wound in the leg
and malaria she is now suffering from.
This appeal for understandable reason is also being released to the press and
wider public.
Hope you will kindly appreciate the gravity of the situation and act with
appropriate promptness.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Yours
