That helps, let me restate to make sure I understand.

Position refers to how the camera is rotated relative to the paper. So
assuming the center of the camera is always at the center of each image
and the distance to the image is the same, this corrects for how the
camera may have rotated around a point.

View seems like it would be also covered by the position if using the
same camera for all images. Am I correct?

Translation is how the center of the camera has changed relative to the
center of the image. Am I correct that x and y are left/right and
up/down and z is the distance the camera is from the object?

Barrel fixes straight lines being curved.

I did find that telling Hugin to use separate lenses for each of the 2
images helps quite a bit. 
I stumbled upon this tutorial that suggested using 2 lenses
