After telling MacOS that everything was okay (and setting Full Disk Access) 
everything is now working on my MacBook Pro
         15-inch, Mid 2012) running Catalina 10.15.7, Intel Core i7 16GB 
memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB.

So you can caulk this up as a great success.
