I have wished the same many times, basically every time I use this tool!
Maybe a compromise would be to use a polygonal lasso tool. Something
like this is already implemented for masking, I guess some code could be
reused.
Sorry, my coding knowledge dates from last century, I'm no help
implementing it.

Yes, this seems an excellent idea.
As people have told me on other projects when I come up with an idea
like this: "Send code". I don't know how difficult it is, but my
guess is that nobody else will implement it.
